Easter Mona! What is it?
If there is anything traditional in Alicante, at Easter, it is “eating the mona” on Sunday and Easter Monday.
For those who do not know “la mona” is a sweet paistry , with a hard-boiled egg in the center, which is eating as a snack after a day in the outdoors with friends. (According to tradition, the godparents gave this to their Godchildren).
And after eating the cake, what do we do with the egg? Well, anything but eat it that is for sure, because tradition dictates that we must “shell” it in front of the first “distracted” person we find resulting in lots of laughter and messing around, and usually ends up a total mess and obiously inedible. (I’m sure we all have stories about a certain egg in our face..).
I am already looking forward to this moment and thinking who is going to be my “victim” this year (hahaha).
So from Playa San Juan, anyone who has not tried “La Mona” I highly recommend it, so go to your nearest bakery and buy a couple of them and schedule a day in the outdoors with family and friends and enjoyyyyyy.
