Continuing the series that began a few posts ago today we are going to another city, Calpe on the Costa Blanca and some 60 kms away from La Playa San Juan via the AP7 highway N332, or if you prefer to go near the sea which will get you there in about an hour.
Undoubtedly the emblem of the city is the Peñón de Ifach an impressive rock off its beaches that seems to be vigilant in keeping the city from any danger. With its 332 meters in height and a kilometer long, it has always been a key reference for sailors. If you are daring enough you can hike up this rock without the need of special equipment, but we don’t recommend this unless you are an experienced hiker.
Other sites of interest are, El Torreon of Peca built in the XV century and church, and The Plaza of the Mariners. Its great weather, beaches and a welcoming city round up the reason so many foreigners have made this their home. Another great getaway you will not regret.

Can you believe it? Yes 1euro (ok 1.20 to be accurate unless you have purchased their handy dandy savings bono bus swipe card, which will bring it back down to a buck) is what it will cost you to go from Alicante to the Airport and vice versa. It will probably cost you another euro to get to Playa San Juan .
Everyday Monday through Sunday from the Plaza Puerta del Mar you can take a bus that will take you directly to the airport starting at 6:30, 11:40, 14:20, 16:20, 21:40. How easy is that? a taxi ride can cost you more than 40 euros or more..

For those of you who are locals in Playa San Juan, I wont have to sell you this restaurant so much because I’m sure you will all agree it is one of the best Italian places in town. Pizzeria Regina, located near the Fontana comercial center offers home cooked Italian meals with a great service.
Once you have tried one of their pasta dishes or pizzas you will know what I’m talking about. The terrace area in the summer is always full but the service is always great. You must call ahead of time to make reservations, specially on the weekends.. A great place for a family gathering or a romantic dinner..

A few days ago I was reading one of my favorite blogs Faloco and in one of his posts he described how he got a traffic ticket (140 euros, and lost two points) in his return trip to Xixona from Alicante and all as a result of a fixed radar .
You and I know that traffic laws are meant to be respected and that authorities need to have means to enforce them and some of these means are the “radar traps” that we could find almost anywhere. We also know (or if you don’t you should know) that all these are public information and we can find out where each and everyone is located..
But from my point of view I think these are traps for drivers. Let me explain, in many cases they are located in places where it is difficult to control your speed. For example, when you are exiting an expressway where the legal authorized speed is 100 km / hr and the speed trap is placed right on the exiting ramp where you don’t have enough time to slow down to the new speed limit. And there are no arguments, the policeman that stops you might be a nice guy like in the case of our friend Faloco , but you are going to get a ticket anyway and your points are lost. I don’t think its fair. It is liek capturing a jail bird. And this is just one example, and so I ask myself, how often are these radars calibrated? How do we know they are working properly?
In other countries, an anti-radar device is legal for all drivers to use. This device tells you in time when a radar has made contact with your vehicle. What’s curious is that according to statistics drivers who carry this detector are more cautious, drive more slowly and therefore have fewer accidents , of course the police don’t like these systems very much, but in the end, isn’t the important part to avoid accidents? So why should they care? Why not authorize these systems and maybe some drivers will be more conscious and eventually not speed at all.
Figuring out where the “hot spots” are is great, but more importantly is to always drive with caution. Remember “Right of Way is not the right way, precaution is”.

The end of September is here, fall has started and the new school year is on the way. Next month the kids will be in school the entire day and after school activities will begin. October is also the month where most parents decide to enroll their children in an academy so they could continue to reinforce what they are learning in school or take advantage and learn something new like a language for instance.
In Playa San Juan there are several academies, but today we want to introduce a brand new one called Academia Cabo Golf located in the Miriam Blasco area that offers everything you need for your kids to learn and learn. They offer all sort of help courses for general subjects such as math, science, and all others. They also offer 3 levels of English courses, which we all know is the course that is the most requested being that English is one of the most spoken languages and one of the most important ones in the world.
If you haven’t signed up your kids yet I suggest you give Academia Cabo Golf a call and give your children the opportunity to be all they can be.
